The cool thing is you could go to 4 MMW shows and get 4 different experiences (acoustic, stretchy electric, groovy electric, DJ layering, etc) depending on when and where. Again, kinda like the Dead if you had gone to 4 shows in different eras. :)

Any other bands out there with this level of mutability over time? I'd love to hear more bands like that! I gather Hank Williams III (in LMA) and maybe Harry Connick Jr (not yet in LMA) are like that?

Club d'Elf shows vary a lot, in large part based on who is playing on that particular night. Granted this is a bit different because it's not the same set of musicians all the time, but it does keep things interesting, and it's great to hear what the different players can do with the same set of songs...

There's obviously something I'm not getting here. I've seen MMW a couple of times, heard some of their live recordings, but it seems to lack a certain heart or substance. It's more like they're trying "this trick" now "that trick" and "here's another trick" with their instruments, all technique and hipness, but no soul.

Ah well, it took me years to "get" the Dead, too, and here I am starting my third decade as Deadhead. :-)
